Good Times Burgers and Frozen Custard

Good Times Burgers and Frozen Custard is a Colorado-based burger chain that’s been around since 1987.  Strangely enough, Spouse and I had never heard of the chain  though we live in Colorado, until they opened a branch close to our place. That was just a couple of months ago and we promptly checked it out a few days after they opened.

Today, we decided to have a very late lunch out and instead of going further up north to PF Chang’s like we were originally planning, I insisted we go back to Good Times…it was closer, it was late, I was hungry and I had my camera.  I could finally write about this local burger chain that serves only additives-free Coleman natural beef burgers.  Coleman Natural is another Colorado-based food company.

On this visit,  I went for the Mighty Deluxe Burger that was listed for just $1.99. It’s your basic burger with lettuce, onions, tomato and pickles.  I thought a burger minus all the extras (like bacon and cheese) to mask the flavor of the burger meat would be a good place to start for a review.  The meat patty was not as thin as some chains,  it’s also not the size of your homemade or 5-star restaurant burger by a long shot.  The beef flavor was distinctly beef, leaner and far from the regular greasy burger chain burger.  I’d confidently say this is way better burger meat…

But it was the veggies I really flipped over!  They were all so fresh and crisp and dry, not wet or damp like some chains where you’d be drooling all over the table once you get started on your burger.  And no, it’s not because the burger was THAT juicy…no burger is ever THAT juicy.  I always thought the veggies really made a difference in the over-all burger experience and I was proven right by this one.  I hope they always keep the veggies dry and ultra-fresh and I hope they don’t ever skimp on it .

Spouse had the Big Daddy Bacon Burger…it was what I had last time.  It has two patties and is good even without the veggies, but pretty heavy.   I had to give up almost half my bacon burger for Spouse to finish the first time we went…the poor thing, he was stuffed after that.

I picked the combo which includes a small drink and small fries.  The fries are not small – at all.  I’m still munching on my leftovers as I write this. I just couldn’t finish it while we were there, so I brought it home.  These fries are thinly battered and what a difference it makes to the texture.  It was served hot and crisp and perfectly seasoned without the salt sticking to your fingers as you munch. The leftovers I willingly contend with are now cold.  But they are not at all like the regular burger chain fries that become disgracefully stale, atrociously tastless and totally unworthy to be called a spud once they get cold. Yep, I like these fries from Good TImes Burgers…they’re not Arthur Bryant’s fries, but then, nothing compares to those Arthur Bryant’s fries.

And now for the frozen custard…ooohhh, heavenly.  I got a cup of the flavor of the day, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup.  It was yummy.  The peanut butter cup morsels are a bit too sweet like most candies, but the frozen custard was very, very smooth and just perfect.  It was so smooth, creamy and silky….believe me when I say it will have a mellowing effect on all your OCD tendencies.

If you can’t tell how smooth it was from the photo, believe me, it was.

If you don’t believe me, check out a Good Times Burgers & Frozen Custard outlet closest to you!
